چکیده
The asymmetry in forces at an interface due to the different bulk media on either side of it results in unique chemical and physical properties. The chemical composition, the orientational structure, the dielectric and transport properties are among the important properties of the interface that differ from that of the bulk media. One would expect properties such as chemical equilibria, pH, molecular motions, the rates of chemical reactions and physical relaxation processes to differ from that of the bulk media. Despite its importance and widespread interest it remains difficult to get a handle on the chemistry and physics of interfaces using traditional spectroscopic techniques. This is due to the overwhelmingly larger number of solute and solvent molecules in the bulk that dominate the signal originating from the much smaller number of molecules in the interface. An important way to circumvent this difficulty is the application of the nonlinear optical processes of second harmonic (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) to study interfaces [ I]. The key feature of SHG is its intrinsic sensitivity to the non-centrosymmetric interface between two centrosymmetric media. Research in a variety of areas has shown the wide applicability and power of this method [ 2-61, In our laboratory we have focused our attention on equi-

New method for determination of surface pK, using second harmonic generation
A new method to determine the pK, of chemical species at aqueous insulating interfaces is based on the discovery that the interface potential is linearly proportional to the measured second harmonic electric field. The proportionality constant is the effective third-order susceptibility and is the same for all aqueous interfaces studied, which has its origin in the polarization of bulk water in...
متن کاملPolarity of Liquid Interfaces by Second Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy
A spectroscopic method, based on the interface selectivity of second-harmonic generation, is used to obtain the polarity of liquid interfaces. In this paper the second-harmonic measurement of the spectrum of the polarity indicator molecule N,N′-diethyl-p-nitroaniline (DEPNA) at the air/water interface demonstrates the method. Two different approaches are used to measure the intramolecular charg...
متن کاملStudies of Molecular Properties at the Surface of a Liquid Jet by Second Harmonic Generation
We report the use of second harmonic generation (SHG) to study kinetics of adsorption of p-nitrophenol at the air/water interface of a flowing jet. Measurements of the SH signal strength and the polarization of the SH light at various distances (times) along the jet axis yield information about the development of the population density and orientation of nitrophenol at the air/ water interface....
متن کاملObservation of nitrate ions at the air/water interface by UV-second harmonic generation
Nitrate ions have been observed by resonant second harmonic generation in the air/water interface of sodium nitrate solutions when the nitrate mole fraction exceeds 0.02 at ambient conditions. The surface propensity of nitrate is weak compared to those of other small anions determined by the same methodology, in qualitative agreement with recent simulations, experiments, and the position of nit...
متن کاملEnergetics of adsorption of neutral and charged molecules at the air/water interface by second harmonic generation: Hydrophobic and solvation effects
Surface second harmonic generation has been used to study the adsorption of alkyl phenols and anilines and their respective ions to the air/water interface. The free energies of adsorption of the neutral molecules were obtained using a simple Langmuir model. The quantitative effects of the opposing hydrophobic and solvations forces on molecular adsorption were investigated by varying the chain ...
